Minister of National Defense Raimundas Karoblis is a seasoned diplomat: before his appointment as the minister (2016) he has been working with Lithuania‘s diplomatic corps for over twenty years.
Over his diplomatic career Mr. Karoblis was mainly in charge of economic and trade affairs, in the recent years he was coordinating EU related work as the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. As discussions on a common EU security policy were growing stronger in the recent past, defense became increasingly prominent on his agenda.
R. Karoblis is a noted teamwork sympathizer capable of orchestrating the work of an institution and, when convinced of the gravity of the matter, taking up a rigid stance in negotiations. While in the lead of the Representation of Lithuania in Brussels he coordinated Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2013: the work of his team during the Presidency was seen as done with great coordination and precision.
He is a holder of the Knight’s Cross of the Order For Merits to Lithuania (2003) and the Commander‘s Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania (2014).
Mr. Karoblis is a law graduate of Vilnius University; speaks English, French, and Russian. He is 48 years old and is married.
